(EDITOR’S NOTE: In this guest column, Retail Solutions CEO Jonathan Golovin discusses how Big Data can help old-school companies in today’s digital world.)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Silicon Valley is awash in “Big Data” companies providing new types of business analytics — ways to help companies sort through customer emails, online social-media postings or even suspicious web site traffic.

But Big Data also can be helpful to old-school companies selling diapers, beer and bubble bath in today’s digital world.

If I’m a brand manager trying to sell more nasal decongestant, it would be helpful to know if there was a spike in sales this morning at stores in upstate New York –indicating, perhaps, a flu outbreak there. Today, many producers of cold medicine don’t have such store-by-store data for all their major retailers. If they do purchase that data from third parties, it can often be weeks to more than a month old.

Think of the power of that data: On one level, it can ensure that enough medicine is in stock, or being shipped to, stores in the affected area. But the data, properly scrubbed and analyzed, can also be used for much more. If there really is a flu outbreak, wouldn’t companies also like to send hyper-targeted, online or mobile coupons for related products — think Kleenex, Vicks VapoRub or orange juice — to customers in the region? To their mobile phones?

Thanks to recent advances in Big Data and expanded retailer data-sharing programs, I don’t think these scenarios are that far off. I see a revolution underway in how consumer companies are beginning to intelligently use data to better manage their supply chains and run more-sophisticated digital-marketing campaigns. In effect, storied consumer brands will start using the type of science that underpins businesses like Google and Facebook to sell you milk and chewing gum.

When it comes to sales of consumer products — food, household items, pharmaceuticals and the like — there is a lot of data being generated, and more and more of it is being quickly shared with manufacturers by retailers. In our experience, there can be more than 10 billion data points coming in every day for just one large, global manufacturer. This is a big deal for consumer companies because, until now, their marketing groups have focused on tracking aggregated sales and market-share data — not specific, store-by-store numbers — as well as more-vague indicators of online and offline brand “sentiment.”

Think about the possibilities to use this real-time data. A beer maker could kick off five different online marketing campaigns in demographically similar markets to find the one that drove the most sales. Not the most clicks. The most sales. Day by day, the beer company could track how much each campaign lifted sales at nearby stores. If a distinct pattern emerged, the beer maker could quickly switch all its marketing to mimic the successful campaign.

The proliferation of mobile phones expands the possibilities even more. Marketers could directly beam consumers special coupons and offers, selected for them based on past buying habits, as they pass stores, or even as they roam the grocery aisles. Store loyalty cards, which track customers’ purchasing history and generate customized offers based on past buying habits, are a key tool as well.

For the consumer-goods industry, clearly, the possibilities to creatively — and profitably — use Big Data are only getting bigger.

ORLANDO – Ahold USA, Quincy, Mass., plans to launch a vendor collaboration initiative next month that will include sending POS, supply chain and merchandising data via a third-party to some number of its CPG suppliers in order to improve product availability and customer satisfaction.

Ahold USA thus becomes the latest food retailer to focus on exploiting the vast reservoir of data at its disposal. “We were data-rich but data-underutilized,” said Tim Rohrbaugh, its senior director, replenishment and forecasting, during a presentation yesterday at the Supply Chain Conference here, sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. “So we are moving to leverage the data and analytics to improve execution from vendor to consumer.”

Ahold USA will transfer more than 51 data feeds to suppliers via Retail Solutions, (RSi), Mountain View, Calif. All 773 Ahold USA stores — which operate under the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover, Giant Carlisle and Martin’s banners — will participate in the initiative. Rohrbaugh declined to name specific vendors, or the total number, participating in the program.

Under the initiative, Ahold USA, which has $25 billion in annual sales, will “set targets for improvements in on-shelf availability, inventory management, unsaleables reduction and promotional execution,” said Rohrbaugh.

Ahold USA and its suppliers will measure improvements generated through their collaborative efforts by using a 21-measure monthly scorecard.

Company Adds New CMO; GM for Business Development & Innovation; and Chief Scientist to Deepen Focus on Marketing, New Solutions for Global Client Base

Mountain View, CA, Dec. 6, 2012 (PR NEWSWIRE)—Retail Solutions Inc., the leading provider of retail-data technology for the consumer-products industry, has hired several new executives to deepen its product, data and marketing functions. The fast-growing, Silicon Valley company helps makers of consumer goods and retailers to work collaboratively to gain new insights around inventory management, product promotions and customer demand to significantly boost product sales.

The new hires include Chief Marketing Officer Marie Amoruso Jackson, a 12-year marketing veteran at Apple Inc. who was most recently a senior vice-president at LiveOps, and General Manager for Business Development & Innovation Michael Quinn. Quinn previously worked in key brand-management roles at PepsiCo and later helped build digital-media start-ups, including VuCast Media and Premier Retail Networks. PRN was acquired by Thomson SA in 2005.

Steve Antos is RSi’s new chief scientist. Antos worked early in his career at Bell Labs, where he built the first call-detail, transaction-based data mining function for AT&T Consumer Services. Later, while a senior vice president at analytics and consulting firm SymphonyIRI Group, he developed the industry’s first data-analytic capabilities for retail consumer loyalty data. At RSi, he will expand the current data-analysis efforts and create new applications for marketing and sales.

“I’m a data geek,” said Antos, who holds a Ph.D. in quantitative human behavioral analysis from the University of Illinois, where he also was an assistant professor. “I’m all about anything that creates real value from data analysis. And nobody else in the consumer-goods market is doing the type of real-time work RSi is doing.”

Antos, Jackson and Quinn “are all top-notch thinkers and execution experts who have worked at the intersection of retail and consumer products, and all of them will help RSi create deeper and better applications for customers as data becomes more and more central in defining the retailing experience,” said RSi Chairman and Chief Executive Jonathan Golovin. “I am thrilled to have them all on board and am already excited about their contributions.”

RSi has experienced rapid revenue growth over the last three years and was recently named, for the third year in a row, to the Inc. 500|5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The company this year expanded its footprint in Europe with new offices in the UK, Germany and Russia, and it will soon begin doing business in Mexico.

Mountain View, CA, Nov. 13, 2012 (PR NEWSWIRE)—Retail Solutions Inc., the leading provider of retail-data technology for the consumer-products industry, has earned a coveted spot on the Inc. 500|5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies for the third year in a row. The widely tracked list represents the most comprehensive look at a key segment of the U.S. economy and validates RSi’s position as a market leader in providing “big data” analytic solutions to the U.S.’s largest consumer brands.

Retail Solutions, with 2011 revenue of $24.7 million, was credited by Inc. with strong revenue growth and the addition of 153 jobs over three years. The company was founded in 2003 and provides SaaS-based technology to help Fortune 50 companies and others track product sales and inventory in near-real time, which boosts sales and lowers costs across the supply chain.

Earlier this month, Retail Solutions also ranked #49 on the San Jose Business Journal’s annual list of expanding private companies in Silicon Valley. Other companies on the list—which ranked entrants based on revenue growth from 2009 to 2011—included well-known Silicon Valley names including Facebook, Marketo, Palo Alto Networks and Guidewire Software. Three of those companies have since gone public.

“Being named to the Inc. list for three straight years, and receiving the Silicon Valley honor—which puts us in the company of other great technology names–is a tremendous accomplishment and makes our team so proud of the work we’re doing,” said RSi Chairman and Chief Executive Jon Golovin. “We are looking forward to more growth in 2013 as we expand overseas.” RSi this year expanded its footprint in Europe with new offices in the UK, Germany and Russia. Additionally, a partnership with Logistica de Mexico provided an opportunity for RSi to begin doing business in Mexico City. (See related RSi press release also issued today.)

Big-Data Analytics Provider Now Open for Business in Mexico

Mountain View, CA, Nov. 13, 2012 (PR NEWSWIRE)—Retail Solutions Inc., the leading provider of retail-data technology for the consumer-products industry, today announced it is now able to offer services and local support to the consumer-packaged goods and retail community in Mexico.

Mexico is recognized as the 11th largest economy in the world and has a rapidly growing middle class demanding consumer-packaged goods from modern retailers. To deliver services in this fast-growing sector, Retail Solutions has taken a two-pronged approach:

Forming and staffing a subsidiary: RSi Retail Solutions Mexico SA de CV will sell the full suite of RSi’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings directly to its largest international customers. In addition, RSi Mexico will be responsible for first-level customer support for all Spanish- speaking customers in Latin and South America.

Partnering with Logistica de Mexico: Since 2001, they have grown to meet the demands and growing challenges of the processes of supply chain in the country, supported by 80 partners in more than 300 projects implemented with success. Logistica de Mexico (LDM) will sell and deliver Retail Solutions offerings to all other consumer-goods companies. LDM has for many years been a Manhattan Associates reseller and systems integrator and has developed a large client base in Mexico.

“Mexico is a large and rapidly growing market, with significant development in Modern Trade, changing the dynamics for both retailers and consumer goods companies,” explained Jose Ambe, General Manager of Logistica de Mexico. “We have delivered proven value to CPG’s and retailers in the region and are a strong partner in helping them achieve the delivery of their products and services to customers when, how, where, in the exact quantities and with the required quality at competitive costs.”

Alex Hase, RSi’s executive vice president of global sales, has been ensuring sales and support is present in each of the new countries in which RSi does business. “As I look at our global expansion, we want to partner with our large CPG clients as well as the retailers that are servicing the consumer,” he said. “In Mexico, Walmart alone has over 2,000 retail stores that support this geographic area.”

Retail Solutions has launched an aggressive strategic initiative for international expansion to support its customers, the major consumer-goods companies, in all their major markets. “Today more than 20% of Retail Solutions revenues originate from outside of the United States, up from 2% a year ago, and this part of our business will continue to grow at a fast pace,” concluded Peter Rieman, RSi’s chief operating officer. “After having earlier successfully expanded through direct subsidiaries, partnership and M&A, entering Mexico through a combination of subsidiary and partnership with a local company shows that we are flexible in our approach based upon local conditions.”

Retail Solutions’ platform will be available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese and Russian before the end of 2012. The company already supports its worldwide customers (7×24) from three support centers in China, United Kingdom and the United States.

Enhance supply chain visibility

Metro will share its point-of-sale (POS) data with Nestlé enhancing supply chain visibility and helping the manufacturer to improve on-shelf availability. Metro is using a system from RSi Retail Solutions, a data management specialist, in order to share the data down the supply chain.

Monitor stock levels in-store

The system will operate via a cloud-based service that provides Nestlé with real-time downstream data from the retailer’s stores. Nestlé will be able to monitor its stock levels in Metro’s stores and quickly respond to any potential out-of-stock issues.

Supply chain collaboration

A number of retailers are working increasingly closely with suppliers in order to improve service into the distribution centre network and ultimately on-shelf availability. Sainsbury’s has established a vendor managed inventory initiative with Coca-Cola Enterprises, discover how this was achieved here.

Analytics by RSI improves business with Carrefour – Promotions and Shelf Availability / from Jörg Rode

LZnet/rod. The solution offered by the service provider RSI could lead to a new wave of cooperation between retailer and manufacturers using actual POS data. At the ECR-Tag, Kraft Foods manager Jochen Rackebrandt demanded related projects in Germany.

For more than ten years, the Consumer Goods Industry in Germany has been debating how optimization activities for vendors and suppliers can be derived from daily retailer POS-and inventory data without large effort. Now it appears that the stalemate is broken, highlighted by the expansion of the service provider Retail Solutions (RSI) into Europe.

Rackebrand enthused

During the ECR-Tag in Wiesbaden, an obviously enthusiastic Jochen Rackebrandt, Director Customer Supply Chain Development for Kraft Foods Europe, described first experiences of the mutual business optimization between Kraft and Carrefour in Italy.

He described improvements with promotions and product introductions as well as a successful fight against shelf gaps using next day store-level POS data.

Rackebrandt then called on German retailers and his colleagues in the industry to start similar cooperations locally.

Metro Group and Nestlé plan OSA Project

On the ECR-Tag floor, it also became known that Metro Group and Nestlé Germany plan a project for the reduction of Out-of-Stocks on the basis of RSI information.

In the USA, RSI has already won Kraft Foods, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, Unilever and other FMCG Companies as regular user of their analytics.

The service provider does process POS data coming from Walmart and other large food retailers. RSI is now making headway into Europe too, through cooperation projects with British and Belgian Retailers, among others.

Rackebrandt explained in Wiesbaden the first successes of the “Kids” (Kraft’s Integrated Demand Signal), method he uses in Italy.

RSI delivers high Forecast Accuracy

Since September 2011, Carrefour has been sharing sales and inventory data from 57 Italian hypermarkets. RSI analyzes the raw data and presents them to the Kraft employees in an easy-to-understand form. “We ourselves could not process this data flood at all,” explained the manager. The analysis is based on POS data of the prior day as well as longer history periods.

To forecast promotion volumes, Kraft Foods has achieved a store-level forecast accuracy of 98.4 percent. Thanks to this more accurate volume planning, out-of-stocks have been reduced, with sales increasing by about 2.5 percent.

At the same time, exit inventories at the end of the promotions in the stores have been significantly reduced.

The tight collaboration with Carrefour based on RSI data has delivered tangible results, also working for a more reliable distribution of new products in the stores.

With New Partnership, Retail Solutions to Address One of the Fastest Growing Retail Markets and Extend Global Coverage

Mountain View, CA. and Moscow, Russia, May 15, 2012 – Retail Solutions Inc., the leading provider of technology that helps consumer-product companies create value from retailer data, today announced that it is now able to offer services and local support to the CPG and retail community in Russia and the CIS.

To deliver services in Russia, Retail Solutions has partnered with ‘OOO RSi’, a Russian company formed to deliver and support the Retail Solutions Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform in the region.

“Russia is a large and rapidly growing market, with significant consolidation and development in Modern Trade changing the dynamics for both retailers and consumer goods companies,” explained Danny Eldridge, General Director, OOO RSi. “CPG companies in Russia are eager to maximize the opportunity this market represents, and collaboration with major local and international retailers is one of the most effective ways to achieve this goal.”

“Retail Solutions is pursuing an aggressive expansion across European countries,” added Cédric Guyot, General Manager Europe at Retail Solutions. “Russia is the next country our customers are requesting us to support, as a component of our enterprise deployments. Retail Solutions is now rolling out across continents, and we are ramping up both the global and local support and consulting capabilities to ensure we consistently deliver a high ROI rather than a simple technology platform.”

Before the end of 2012, the Retail Solutions platform will be available in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese and Russian. The company already supports its worldwide customers (5×24) from three support centers in China, United Kingdom and the United States.

“More than 20% of Retail Solutions revenues currently come from outside of the United States, up from 2% a year ago, and this percentage is growing at a fast pace,” concluded Peter Rieman, Chief Operating Officer at Retail Solutions. “We continue to look at all options to deliver against the global aspirations of our customers: after having earlier successfully expanded through direct subsidiaries and M&A, entering Russia through a partnership with a local company is a new way to address a new market for Retail Solutions.”

Retail Solutions in Russia can be reached at Moscow, 119180, ul. B. Polyanka, 7/10, building 3, premise 2, office 17, by telephone at +7-903-519-8114, or by email at danny.eldridge@retailsolutions.com.

“Vendor Pulse” Program Mirrors the Successful Implementation of Similar Program at Delhaize US, Focused on Improving Supplier Collaboration

Mountain View, CA, USA – Retail Solutions Inc., the leading solution provider helping consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies create value from operational downstream data, today announced the official launch of Delhaize Belgium’s Vendor Pulse, a collaborative data sharing program aimed at improving the effectiveness of the partnership between Delhaize Belgium and its suppliers.

With Vendor Pulse, Delhaize Belgium, a leading Belgian retailer with over 800 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, will share sales and inventory data for its integrated stores by day, by store and by product with its suppliers, to help them better plan, operate and measure their joint operations with Delhaize Belgium.

“To provide our shoppers with the best possible experience, Delhaize Belgium is launching Vendor Pulse as a foundation to more effective partnerships with our suppliers,” said Xavier Ury, Vice President, Procurement Support,Quality and Supply Chain, Delhaize Belgium. “We strongly believe that Delhaize Belgium and its suppliers both have a strong role to play in improving customer satisfaction: data sharing will create a single version of the truth as we work with our suppliers to help satisfy the need of every shopper every day, in every store.”

With Vendor Pulse, suppliers will gain access to near-real time, detailed visibility over the performance of their products in every Delhaize store. This will enable them to be more responsive to shopper behavior, drive better on-shelf availability, maximize the productivity of inventory and design promotions and assortments better fit to market trends.

Vendor Pulse will be operated by Retail Solutions, who also powers the program at Delhaize US. Delhaize Belgium and Retail Solutions will leverage the experience gained in an initial pilot with two suppliers to optimize the quality of the shared data as well as design and execute effective collaborative processes with all suppliers.

“Retailers like Delhaize Belgium are on the forefront of supply chain and category management innovation in Europe,” added Cédric Guyot, General Manager Europe, Retail Solutions. “In a highly competitive marketplace, both retailers and suppliers are looking for sources of competitive differentiation and operational efficiencies: data sharing provides opportunities to achieve both, and we look forward to supporting Delhaize as we ramp up the Vendor Pulse program.”

Concluded Ury: “Selecting Retail Solutions as the foundation for that program was the natural decision, based on the positive experience we already had in the United States. We look forward to replicating this success with our vendor community in Belgium.”

About Delhaize

As of September 2011, Delhaize Belgium operates 817 stores.

America’s Premier Certified Organic Distributor to Leverage Retail Solutions to Power Retail Execution Management

Mountain View, CA – Retail Solutions, the leading solution provider helping consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies create value from operational downstream data, today announced that United Natural Foods, Inc (UNFI), the leading independent national distributor of natural, organic and specialty foods and related products, has selected its Retail Execution Management platform to transform retailer data into actionable insights and alerts.

“We believe that to build a long-lasting, mutually relationship with our customers, we need to speak the same language as them,” said Craig Terry, Regional Sales Manager, UNFI. “By giving us visibility to retailer data by day, by store and by SKU in a near-real time basis, Retail Solutions enables us to establish a more effective dialog with our customers.”

Using Retail Solutions, UNFI has already identified a series of opportunities to focus on, including:

Reducing out-of-stocks

Driving speed to shelf for new items

Reducing reclaim by focusing on unsaleables

Building more detailed, fact-based category reviews to drive better planograms and assortment recommendations

“We are thrilled to support UNFI in achieving their goals,” said Karl Waldman, Vice-President, Customer Operations, Retail Solutions. “Retail Solutions has built a tremendous experience by supporting more than 500 CPG companies in their evolution towards a more effective Retail Execution Management approach. We look forward to leveraging this experience and to help UNFI better manage their retailer relationships and transform downstream data into a tangible ROI.”

“We chose Retail Solutions because their user-friendly interface enables us to immediately focus on identifying opportunities and solving business issues,” added Terry. “Understanding retailer data is a key enabler to minimize store level out of stocks, improve promotion volume forecast accuracy and fine-tune promotional tactic decisions for products and categories. With Retail Solutions, we have the toolset we need to make our sales team more effective.”

UNFI will start to use Retail Solutions immediately, thanks to its no-investment, no-delay, no-hassle Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model.

Mountain View, CA, USA – Retail Solutions, the leading solution provider helping consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies create value from operational downstream data, today announced it ranked No. 93 on Technology Fast 500™, ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology companies in North America. Retail Solutions grew 1,111% percent during this period.

Retail Solutions’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Golovin, credits the enterprise-level adoption of its industry-leading Retail Execution Management platform with the company’s 1,111% revenue growth.
He said: “Over the past few years, we have seen consumer goods manufacturers move from a tactical to a strategic approach to building partnerships with retailers. Providing better insights and driving more effective collaboration programs now sits on the C-level agenda for many companies and Retail Solutions has become the industry standard. We look forward to accelerating our growth both organically and through acquisitions in the next few years.”

This is Retail Solutions’ third consecutive inclusion on Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500™. The company previously respectively ranked 33 and 48 as a Technology Fast 500™ award winner in 2009 and 2010.
